Our Story…

This foundation was created in honor of two precious lives, Jelani Amari Downing Batson and Jade Rochelle Downing, who tragically passed away after being left unattended in a car while their mother was at work. Jelani was 1.5 years old – full of joy, known for his laughter and his playful spirit. Jade, just three months old, had a radiant smile, big beautiful eyes, and a comforting presence. In her passing, Jade’s organs were donated, and she continues to live on through others.

In the wake of unimaginable loss, this foundation was born — not only as a tribute but as a promise. A promise to advocate for children and provide real support for parents. The pain that birthed this mission was deeply personal, and so is the work we do.

Everything we do is driven by love, purpose, and the belief that no child should ever be left alone. This foundation will provide relief to parents and caregivers through real-time resources, support, and safe environments for children. Children left alone is a growing epidemic, and we are determined to be part of the solution.

Dr. Pamela J. Smith Downing – CEO

Dr. Pamela J. Smith Downing, founder and CEO of the Jelani & Jade Parent Foundation, is an advocate for education, parenting, and healing. With a doctorate in education and a career dedicated to empowering families and students, her mission is to turn personal loss into purposeful service. She brings leadership, vision, and a mother’s enduring love to this organization built in memory of her grandchildren.

Joi Downing – COO

Joi Downing serves as the COO of the Jelani & Jade Parent Foundation. As the proud aunt of Jelani and Jade, her passion for children’s safety and well-being drives everything she does. Inspired by witnessing the lack of overnight childcare options, she envisioned a 24-hour daycare that would support working parents, especially those on nontraditional schedules. Joi is deeply committed to ensuring her niece and nephew’s legacy lives on through meaningful, supportive community efforts.

Mission

To honor the memory of Jelani and Jade by providing resources, support, and advocacy for parents and caregivers — ensuring no child is left alone, unsupported, or forgotten.

Vision

A world where every parent has the support they need and every child has a safe, loving environment to grow in — no matter the circumstance.

Purpose

To bridge gaps in childcare, emotional support, and community resources for parents — especially those navigating postpartum challenges, financial hardship, or lack of overnight care options.

Future Goals

We envision a 24-hour daycare center that serves as more than just a place of care — it will also host:

After-school programs

A donation center for essential items

Parenting and postpartum support workshops

Educational and wellness events for families

A hub for resources, healing, and hope
